About the role

The Kāpiti Coast District Council’s Rates team is responsible for ensuring the invoicing and collection of property and water rates is carried out in compliance with relevant legislation including the Local Government Act 2002, the Local Government (Rating) Act 2002; the Rating Valuations Act 1998 and in a manner that is Customer focused, Efficient, Accurate and Timely.

The Debt Management Officer works as part of the rates team and key responsibilities include the collection of outstanding property and water rates and may include working with other business units to assist with the collection of other outstanding debt across the Council. This role requires working on-site at our Paraparaumu office.

Skills and Experience

  • Effective interpersonal skills and commitment to customer service, particularly demonstrating patience, empathy and resilience when dealing with customers.
  • Willingness to and capability for working with a wide range of people within and outside the organization.
  • Effective time management skills and ability to work effectively without supervision and collaboratively as an effective team member.
  • Excellent problem-solving skills.
  • Demonstrated accurate numerical and data-entry skills with practical experience in the finance area.
  • Demonstrated effective communication skills, both oral and written.
  • Ability and willingness to learn Council policies and procedures.
  • Knowledge of the Local Government (Rating) Act 2002 and other relevant legislation/or experience working in a similar role.
  • Demonstrated ability to set priorities and work to and meet deadlines.
  • High level of computer skills competency – MS Office products in particular excel and word.
  • Experience in working closely with financial computer systems and software (familiarity with MagiQ is an advantage).
  • Preferably a holder of a current and valid NZ Drivers’ licence.
